Why your donation matters more than ever this Giving Tuesday

Circle of Hope logo with white Giving Tuesday heart in center

After a year like this one, it can be easy to start feeling helpless in the face of overwhelming need. Will my $25 really help? Can I make a difference when the need is so deep? Does my contribution really matter?

The answer is a resounding “yes.” Now, more than ever, your generosity this Giving Tuesday has the power to transform lives.

The family shelter system in Massachusetts is exceeding capacity for the first time in the 40 years since MA became a “right-to-shelter” state for families experiencing homelessness. With astronomical housing prices and stagnant wages, thousands of families are struggling to get by. 4,000 children in Boston Public Schools alone experience homelessness every year and are at greater risk of chronic absenteeism due to housing instability and clothing and hygiene insecurity. Up to 17% of public college students in MA experience homelessness in a given year.

Thousands of migrant families are arriving in Massachusetts with only the clothes they are wearing, unprepared for the looming New England winter. Unable to obtain work visas, these families literally have no way to provide their children with winter hats, mittens, and coats. Many of these families are medically fragile; all are traumatized. They need hygiene products for health and dignity. Their babies need porta-cribs to sleep safely, whether they are in shelter or a temporary intake facility or overflow site like a convention center, college dorm, or office building. Without seasonally appropriate clothing, hygiene essentials, bedding, and towels, these families are at greater risk of ongoing health complications and compounded trauma.

Circle of Hope’s partner shelters and programs are seeing an increase in need across the board. Several partner programs are reporting a marked increase in the number of heavily pregnant women arriving in shelter with nothing for themselves or their babies. One partner family shelter had six births in September alone. Many of our partner programs are also seeing an increase in the number of older adults - particularly recent widows - seeking services. For the first time ever, we are regularly receiving requests for incontinence products like Depends. We are working diligently to meet the unique needs of each client we serve.

So this year, Circle of Hope needs your help more than ever to keep up with the growing humanitarian crisis in Massachusetts. Your donation puts gloves on the hands of a child waiting for the school bus, warm jammies on a newborn baby in shelter, well-fitting maternity clothes on an expectant mom who has been re-wearing the same sweats her whole pregnancy, menstrual products in the backpack of a teen who might otherwise miss school during her period, and clean socks and waterproof boots on the feet of a medically compromised man who spends his days outside while shelters are closed.

Every single dollar donated is a message of hope, support, and love for someone going through something as isolating and traumatic as homelessness. While we may not solve clothing and hygiene insecurity for everyone this Giving Tuesday, your gift has the power to make all the difference to an individual or family in Boston, letting them know that someone saw them in a moment of deep need and reached out a hand to help. Your compassion will change someone’s life.

Give the Gift of Hope this Giving Tuesday

Dear Friends,

November 29, 2022 is Giving Tuesday, a global movement founded on the belief that every act of generosity has the power to change a life.

More than ever, we know this to be true. This year, your generosity enabled Circle of Hope to answer every urgent call for help from our partner shelters and programs. Mark Goldschmidt, Resiliency for Life Program Coordinator at Framingham High School, described the impact of Circle of Hope's donations on students experiencing homelessness:

"For these students to get the clothes and toiletries they desperately need while also experiencing kindness and generosity towards strangers restores some of their faith in humanity and in their sense of control over their own future."

Your generosity has the power to improve physical and mental health, restore agency, and build a sense of community for children and adults experiencing trauma. Please give a gift today to meet the urgent needs of thousands of families and individuals in Boston and MetroWest.

Thank you for your life-changing support.

Most gratefully,

Barbara Waterhouse, Founder & Executive Director

Your Gift Helps Families in Crisis

Dear Friends,

Family homelessness is on the rise in Massachusetts and many family shelters Circle of Hope serves are beyond capacity.

This year, we expanded our Emergency Response Program to meet the increasing needs of families in crisis. We also launched a new pilot partnership with Framingham High School to help students experiencing homelessness and began serving families in scattered site shelters across MetroWest.

Your generosity made it possible for us to help more people than ever before.

When a high school student and his mother narrowly escaped a house fire, you helped them recover by replacing their lost clothing and shoes. You gave a 22-year-old woman the clothing and hygiene essentials she needed to care for her three younger siblings. You provided warm clothing and coats to 35 families facing their first New England winter. You supported the physical and mental health of a grandmother and her six grandchildren by providing clothing in the correct sizes for the entire family.

Together, we can continue answering every urgent call for help. Please donate by December 31, 2022 to help thousands of families and individuals stay warm, healthy, and safe this year. Your gift will comfort someone experiencing trauma right now.

Thank you for your generous support!

Most gratefully,

2021 Annual Campaign

Dear Friends,

In mid-June, Community Service Officers from Boston Police Department District E-13 asked Circle of Hope to help a young woman who was pregnant and homeless. “She doesn’t have anything,” the officers told us. Her due date was less than three weeks away.

Right away, we sent the soon-to-be mom brand new clothing, a Welcome Baby Bag, a new mom kit, and essential toiletries. These vital donations helped her and her newborn thrive in the vulnerable postpartum months.

The number of emergency response requests grew this year, as did our partnership with the Boston Police Bureau of Community Engagement. Within 48 hours, we answered their emergency calls for dozens of families who lost everything in house fires, giving 6,500 items to children and families throughout Boston. Ten graduating public high school students who were homeless received our “Welcome to College” packages of bedding, toiletries, and health essentials at a special recognition celebration. Through Circle of Hope’s Vaccine Equity Initiative, Community Service Officers distributed COVID-19 vaccine postcards in multiple languages to help families who are homeless access reliable, life-saving vaccine information.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have supplied our partner shelters and clinics with 166,000 essential items – including 31,700 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) – to prevent the spread of illness and keep the people we serve healthy.

We couldn’t have done it without you. Your generosity made it possible for Circle of Hope to answer every call for help. Your support now will help us deploy warm clothing, hygiene supplies, and PPE directly to people in need this year.

Please give a gift to our Annual Campaign by December 31, 2021 to help us protect infants, children, and adults who are homeless and most at-risk during the pandemic.

Thank you for your generosity and support. Together, we are protecting health and saving lives.

Most gratefully,

Barbara Waterhouse

Summer COVID-19 Response Summary and Updated Report

Screen Shot 2020-08-12 at 1.32.44 PM.png

What an impactful summer at Circle of Hope! In June and July alone, Circle of Hope made 34 deliveries to our partner shelters, clinics, and programs. We provided 20,000 essentials for health to homeless families and individuals, including 4,000 PPE items to protect them from COVID-19.

We updated our COVID-19 Response Report to include our deliveries, stories, and impact from June and July. Our summer highlights are summarized below. To read the full updated report, please click here.

We resumed deliveries to Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP), Fenway Health, and Framingham State University (FSU). For various reasons, these three partners were more difficult to reach in the earliest months of the COVID-19 crisis. BHCHP and Fenway Health both set up COVID-19 testing sites and BHCHP has been actively treating COVID-19 patients. FSU closed its campus when the COVID-19 crisis began.

With persistent outreach and careful planning, Circle of Hope is back to providing hygiene supplies, hand soap, sanitizer, face masks, and essential new clothing to students and patients who are experiencing homelessness at these locations. Homeless students can now access Circle of Hope donations by appointment through the Rams Resource Center food pantry on campus. BHCHP employees now pick up donations for their Transgender Program and other clinics. We made two deliveries to Fenway Health in July, including a 24-hour emergency response, providing new clothing in the correct sizes for an individual in the Violence Recovery Program there.

This summer, we received several generous grants to fund our shelter deliveries and COVID-19 relief efforts from the City of Framingham and the MetroWest Health Foundation. In July, we also received 100 new face masks from COVID Shield Boston as well as many generous donations from our Emergency Response Wish List on Amazon. We are still reaching out to new companies and organizations for mask donations and gratefully accepting donations to our Emergency Fund.

We will share details about our September re-opening plans on our website, social media, and e-newsletter in late August and early September.

Stay Home. Stay Healthy. Share HOPE.

Circle of Hope is committed to the health and well-being of homeless individuals. We are also committed to you, our supporters. Given the uncertainties of the COVID-19 virus, we have decided to cancel our HOPE Blooms event on May 2nd.

HOPE Blooms is our single largest fundraiser. Last year we provided clothing and necessities to 8,000 homeless individuals and families. To ensure Circle of Hope is able to continue to meet the needs of those we serve, during this crisis and throughout the year, we ask that you please support our "Virtual HOPE Blooms" through the purchase of a "ticket."

Thank you.
